August, 2009: REPOST of a repost of a repost!! I just got out of Affinity Hospital in Massillon. It seems that a virus tried to establish residence in my "gut" and REEEAALLYY caused some rucus down there deep in the bowels of my abdomen. Naturally,...while I was in the hospital,..I talked to people!! And naturally,.nurse aides and a nurse or two were amazed that when I was not running to the "john" with my infusion pump in tow,..I was sleeping peacefully in my bed!! Finally,..one "nurse" asked me,.."How can you sleep so peacefully when every other patient is complaining about the one old man,..a few doors down from your room,..who keeps screaming so loudly? It's almost as if you don't hear him!!" "I DON'T hear him." I said quite dryly,.." But I'm glad that you told me that he is screaming. Now that I have that fact tucked safely away in my brain,..I can give an appropriate social response to anyone who complains about his noise making!!" The "nurse" looked at me like I was half nuts. "Yeah! Right!!" she says to me,.."You can't hear the old guy yelping down the hall? What gives? Are you deaf or something?" "Not deaf," I mildly answered her,.."just hard of hearing!!" "But you can talk!!" she sputters to me. I sighed,.."Yeah! I've talked in one form or another all my life. And I write,..too!!" "You wouldn't write out this conversation,..would you?" she seemed a bit worried. "Yep," says I. "I suppose," said the "nurse" in a surprising good natured way,.."That you will say that you have "educated" me about being hard of hearing!" "No, ma'am,"..says I,.."You've educated me. I thought that the.."If they can't hear,..then they can't talk" line died out five hundred years ago!! I have just learned from you,..a nurse,,..it's still going strong and in good health!! The "nurse" laughed and we parted as friends. To protect this lady's privacy,..this "nurse" might not have been a nurse but another form of caregiver at the Massillon Hospital, and it is at her request,.. I make this repost.: July, 2009: A REPOST AT THE REQUEST OF A NEW FRIEND MET AT THE DEAF WORKSHOP IN GREENSBORO NORTH CAROLINA AS WE DISCUSSED PROBLEMS THAT WE HAD ENCOUNTERED WIH "SO-CALLED REHABILITATION COUNCILORS" I was not surprised to find out that such "problems are not limited to Canton, Ohio and surrounding areas!!: Repost of August, 2007: "THERE ARE NO BLIND PhD's!! " so a man from Canton Rehabilitation services told me some years back at a meeting in Zanesville, Ohio. Rosezelle Boggs Qualls, who was sitting by my side at the time,..gave a gasp of shock at that statement. You see,..both Rosezelle and I both know Dr. Daryl Greene,..who lives in Richmond,..Indiana,..IS a blind PhD!! Dr. Greene is sitting next to me in one of the above pictures!! One of my all time favorite tape recordings that I have is a person with an "advanced degree" telling me in a very serious and important voice,..according to my son,..that I would "scare any serverely disabled folks that I would try to work with." Of little interest to her was the stack of letters, which I had placed in front of her, that I had from the families of the disAbled folks that I have worked with over the past twenty years! I invited her to read the letters. She wouldn't. "Those letters are irrelevent!" said she. I picked up one of them and read it to her. "It's still irrelevent!" she said. Frustrated,..I said,.."I didn't write the letters. I didn't write the news paper articles!!" "They are still irrelevent!" she said,.."According to my testing,..you are not capable of doing the things that those letters and newspaper articles say that you did." According to the letters,..I didn't scare anyone but the folks,..who were trying to convince their family members that those family members were "hopelessly disAbled!" (No one is hopeless!) Then,..there was the rehab person,..who even though I told him that WALKING FREE had essentially been co-written by a Deaf woman,..a blind man,..and my own lovely self,...that,.."There is nothing of value in the book that would be there for me as a PROFESSIONAL working with disAbled people,..to learn!!" I am not a PROFESSIONAL rehab worker,..but there are always new things that I can learn.... Then,..there was the BSVI person,..who told Rosezelle..(I think that Rosezelle was with me at that conference), and I,..."..There are NO blind PhDs!!" I was still on the Ohio Governor's Council On People With Disabilities at that time, and my blind friend from Athens University,..who was and still might be a Professor of Music there,..a PhD and totally blind,..that statement really got his attention!! Dr. Daryl Greene,..almost totally blind,..and co-author of WALKING FREE,..just snorted when informed of the fact that there were.."no blind PhDs!!" He did the some of the writing and the editing of Densmorereid's books!! It seems that the fact that "There are no blind PhD's is accepted by everyone EXCEPT the blind PhD's!!" Or, at least the blind PhD's that I know of!!" Idiots abound. Ignore them I say. Hugs!
